"It was a time to shine, but not for ourselves"

The murmur of the crowd. The lights fading to an irrepressible darkness. The determination in the eyes of the performers as they hasten to their places. This was the night long-anticipated by every antelope, lion, and bird. This was opening night. It felt almost like a dream, coming up the aisle toward the never-failing call of Rafiki; and, like a dream, it was over almost as soon as it had begun.

As I said before this was the opening night. “But of what?” you might ask. To that, I would reply, “The Lion King.”

We had been working, revising, and rehearsing for months on end. We had done voice exercises, improv games, and wall sits (much to our displeasure), but most of all we had learned to grow and work together in the love of Jesus Christ our Lord. Now it was show night; the time when we would serve our community through the gifts God purposely placed in each of our hearts for good.

The darkness lifted, revealing all of the African wilderness, its plants, and its animals. It was time to shine, but not for ourselves. We were to shine the light of Jesus through us upon others, that the world may see His love.
